On the one hand, the bills Newsome has vetoed suggest they have a lot of arm-twisting power. On the other, the whole Trump project is on the skids now, and so is the economy though no doubt the worst is still ahead. The effort to get the feds to bail out the AI/crypto industries, when their bubble is like on the cusp of bursting, may compound it all so that the crash when it comes is really resounding, "like no one's ever heard before."
Emailed both senators and my house rep today, about to text more people to do the same. I'm not on Truth Social, so I didn't see this until you and Gary Marcus posted about it. Thanks (as always) for the heads up.
Hope you recover from your cold soon. Currently reading "Enshittification" after watching your last podcast with Cory. Really enjoying it and helps to explain a lot of what is going on.
First, I had that nasty cold that wiped me out for over a week (with a cough for a good month), so I hope you're on the mend soon. Second, if they somehow "win" in getting the federal ban on AI reg over the line in the NDAA, they're still not safe from ridicule from either constituents or state governors going into the midterms. Even DeSantis is not having it. The first target of the SV pro-AI Super PAC, Leading the Future, Alex Bores is using their focus on him to his advantage. Not only is he a CS masters grad from Georgia Tech, he worked at Palantir and quit b/c of their contract renewal with ICE. He's seen how the sausage is made. And now he's running for Congress with a pro-AI Safety piece to his platform after holding a seat in the NY state assembly, having co-authored their state's RAISE Act. AI impacting jobs, AI data centers in their backyards, pending lawsuits against chatbots...public sentiment may prevent the 2024 crypto Super PAC playbook from working as well in 2026.
