Glad I'll be left behind when it comes to AI TV. I think many assume that AI is for the collective good, when in reality they forget the military industrial application, or don't want to discuss for fear of being labeled "backward" or worse yet - a conspiracy theorist.
This is why Musk often gets a pass, and is allowed to irradiate our planet with satellites, not to mention the drones that function on AI Killware like Lattice from Anduril.
Great work! One thing worth keeping an eye on, we seem to be in a new wave of Waymo boosting. I’d love to see some perspectives on this, as everything so far seems PR inflected positive posting.
Excellent compilation and commentary! I had seen posts about several of these articles and papers, and now I know which ones I want to read first. I work in the financial services industry and go to a lot of AI-themed conferences, dinners, etc. These topics are hardly ever - well, never, really, touched on - it's like I live in two different worlds :) These events are basically all hurrah, Gen AI is here to stay, and ROI is just a year, or two, or three away, and, of course, buy this/do this/read this OR GET LEFT BEHIND, lol. Thanks for the work you are doing in this space. It helps me maintain my sanity.
As someone who spent some years looking at environmentally conscious design manufacturing, AI seems to be most inconsiderate of this. And it's not just "guzzling gas" but also water. See AI Data Centers Threaten Global Water Security published today on Lawfare available at https://www.lawfaremedia.org/article/ai-data-centers-threaten-global-water-security. Why do I get the feeling that in the rush to AI everything and build giant data centers (that won't be hiring lots of people -- hmm sound familiar?) there are lots of unintended consequences that no one seems to be looking at as they are so enthralled with how they will be able to run their companies with less people.
ps Thank you for all of the links. I am in the legal field and looking at how AI can be used to help with some of the more boring legal work but it still needs lots of overseeing.
Well, that's an easy one. Money, power, and fantastic tech toys - cool and sexy. Climate crisis - not cool and sexy, and so absolutely irrelevant for these folks. Besides, I bet they think they'd have enough money to save themselves from whatever consequences of the climate crisis. Hell, have you seen Don't Look Up? 😅
I work pretty closely at an AI-heavy company, and it's getting scary just how badly this tech is being ̶u̶s̶e̶d̶ regulated. There are so many obvious icebergs in our path; it'll be great to have someone letting us know which ones are drifting our way and which are halfway through the hull.
This is excellent. I won't say it made me less concerned, but it gave some helpful and needed clarity, and, as someone already commented, direction on what to read and where to direct attention.
Excellent summary. I hope you will NOT put up a paywall, as that will reduce your reach and hence the impact of your voice. Rather, consider how you can utilise the content and your insight as a professional speaker. Feel free to reach out if you want some ideas for how to do this. You'll find me on elinhauge.com.

Most excellent report! Thanks😊

This is amazing, thanks! Charles Logan and I just wrapped up an undergrad class at Northwestern exploring AI in education from a historical and ethical lens. Will add resources here to our syllabus for next year. https://open.substack.com/pub/sepehrvakil/p/engaging-ethics-and-politics-of-ai?r=38hki&utm_medium=ios

This was incredibly useful; please pub as often as you can. Would love to see the "bUt Ai Is GoOd At CoDiNg" BITM-take down in the next report for this bit of news: https://www.theregister.com/2024/12/10/ai_slop_bug_reports/
