Revolution is inevitable it is laughable that the prospect of millions of unemployed and hungry on the streets is not being considered by politicians globally. What is coming are the pitch forks for billionaires. They are grossly underestimating the desperation of millions of hungry people with no jobs due to AI.
Believe me, they consider it, and even more so, they're helping to orchestrate it. They don't run the show here...revolution is naturally bound to happen and it must.
When I was younger I would have thought it was optimistic to think we'd have the energy to keep the slave mall open after the oil crash. Now that seems very naive. The server/slave mall will be the last thing to close even as everything else goes dark.
What makes this unsettling is how plausible the busywork logic already feels. Labor preserved for social stability, not meaning. It’s a reminder that the real risk after an AI bubble is mass employment stripped of dignity.
"Busy" reminds me somewhat of that freaky New Yorker piece that appeared in October ("Inside the Data Centers That Train A.I. and Drain the Electrical Grid") that takes you deep inside the belly of the beast. It also reminds me that much of dystopian science fiction is no longer really fiction anymore since we're now living within an actual dystopia. But anyway... happy new year!
To me, the dystopia in this (gorgeously written) story seems optimistic. I don't envision we will have a Great Recovery Act to deal with the joblessness from AI. That attributes too much good will to those in power. I think once the oligarchs don't need ordinary human beings for labor, we the masses will become mere vermin to them, a liability to them on this planet of climate disruption and dwindling resources.
Hi there People in the USA and Europe are being sanctioned for speaking out about the current regime. This means that their accounts with American organisations are cancelled. Do you have any plan b for where to go if this happens, for example how will we find you if this communication medium stops suddenly?
Hey I love the illustration you've used by Rebekah - can I check, is that an illustration that you use with Rebekah's permission? I'm just wondering how using illustration by illustrators works on substack. I don't use any AI for my article illustrations, I source mine from copyright free images that are pre 1929. So I'm curious about how you used this particular image. I'd love to use Rebekah's images as they are really powerful, but I'm not sure how I'd go about it. Thanks for your feedback on this specific query!! I love your articles.
